As Detroit moved into second place in the American League Central and Toronto fell to last place in the East, there was very little contest. Behind four RBIs from Prince Fielder, the Tigers routed the Blue Jays 11-1 at Comerica Park.
Fielder now has 14 RBIs on the season and is one of six Tigers who played Thursday that are currently batting over .350. The bulky first baseman’s average is .355.
Toronto, which loaded up this offseason in the hopes of being a contending team, has struggled so far this season and could neither generate offense nor stop the Tigers on Thursday.
Torii Hunter also batted in three runs for the Tigers and Doug Fister (2-0) was the winning pitcher after allowing one earned run in eight innings. Detroit will square off against the AL West leading Oakland Athletics on Friday.
