The New York Yankees have long been the preeminent franchise in “The Big Apple.” If Opening Day is any indicator, however, that may change this season.
Collin Cowgill hit a grand slam to lead the Mets to an 11-2 home victory over the San Diego Padres. Filling in for #1 starter Johan Santana, Jonathon Niese performed admirably and even went 2-2 from the plate.
Meanwhile, the Yankees, missing Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson, and long-time face of the franchise Derek Jeter, were thumped by rival Boston Red Sox 8-2.
