Western Kentucky turned in a valiant effort in their second round match-up with Kansas, but the 16-seed could not make history as Kansas outlasted the Hilltoppers 64-57. No 16-seed has ever beaten a 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Jayhawks’ defense stifled Western Kentucky’s offense in the second half and Kansas Senior Jeff Withey willed them to victory.
Jeff Withey led all scorers with 17 points but his largest contribution came on the defensive end. Withey was responsible for 7 blocks and it was his length and athleticism that caused the Hilltoppers to alter their shots, leading to many missed baskets.
Kansas will move on to face North Carolina in the round of 32 with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line.
