VCU’s first game of the tournament was over almost as soon as it started. The Rams opened up a 21-9 lead in the first 8 minutes of the half and never looked back, dismantling the Akron Zips on the way 46-point victory. The final score read 88-42 in favor of VCU, but the game was not even that close.
VCU’s dominate defense and efficient offense were on display as the Rams created 21 Akron turnovers while only committing 5 turnovers of their own. The Rams were also on fire from deep, going 8 of 16 three. Troy Daniels led the VCU effort, scoring 23 points. Daniel’s was also responsible for 6 of the 8 made three pointers.
VCU turned in perhaps the most impressive performance of the entire day of action in their statement win over the Zips that undoubtedly sent a message to the rest of the field. The 46-point win was the largest margin of victory of a No. 5 over a No. 12 in tournament history. The Rams are expecting to face a much more difficult test in the round of 32 when they face Michigan on Saturday.
