NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reinstated New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton on Tuesday. The NFL had suspended Payton for the Saints “Bountygate” scandal and voided his contract. Last week, the Saints signed Payton to a five-year contract that was reported to be one of the most lucrative in the NFL.
According to NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, Payton acknowledged in a meeting with Goodell “his responsibility for the actions of his coaching staff and players and pledged to uphold the highest standards of the NFL.”
“We had a very productive discussion,” said Goodell in a statement. “Sean fully complied with all the requirements imposed on him during his suspension. More important, it is clear that Sean understands and accepts his responsibilities as a head coach and the vital role that coaches play in promoting player safety and setting an example for how the game should be played at all levels.”
Payton can now assume coaching duties, such as attending the Senior Bowl to scout for talent and hiring assistant coaches to fill out his staff.
This year’s Super Bowl is being held in New Orleans, a city that once loved Goodell for the work he did after Hurricane Katrina. However, this is not the case anymore after the “Bountygate” scandal. Goodell was welcomed to New Orleans this week with a float that depicted him being swallowed by giant female genitalia.
