Rep. Ralph Abraham (R-LA) slammed Louisiana Democrat Gov. John Bel Edwards in an exclusive interview on Breitbart News Saturday, saying that his signing the heartbeat bill does not absolve his deep ties to abortionists.

Rep. Abraham, who is running for Louisiana governor against Gov. Edwards, spoke with Breitbart News Saturday host Matthew Boyle in the wake of Edwards signing a law that prohibits abortions in the state once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which is usually at the sixth or seventh week of pregnancy.

Abraham said that he was glad Edwards signed the law, however, he cautioned that the Democrat’s signing of the law was “100 percent politically motivated” because “Lousiana is one of the most pro-life states in America.” Abraham said that if the Democrat governor did not sign the legislation into law, there would be “zero chance” he would be re-elected.

Abraham said, despite his signing the heartbeat bill, he still has many pro-abortion ties.

Rep. Abraham said that state Sen. Karen Carter Peterson railed against the heartbeat bill on the Louisiana Senate floor and on social media and that would not happen unless Gov. Edwards gave his permission to do so.

The Louisiana congressman said that the Lousiana Right to Life group also chastised the Lousiana Democrat for nominating a health secretary that is “incompatible” with the pro-life values of the state.

Abraham asked rhetorically, “would a pro-life governor nominate” a Planned Parenthood “operative” to run his department? “No, he wouldn’t,” Rep. Abraham said.

Boyle then noted that Gov. Edwards said nothing to condemn Virginia Democrat Gov. Ralph Northam after he sparked controversy by saying that infants would be kept “comfortable” as doctors and parents decide what to do it with it. Abraham said Northam held a “six-figure” fundraiser for Edwards.

“We need to keep marching for those that cannot speak for themselves, and that’s that baby in the womb,” Abraham said.
