Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) is the latest Republican Speaker nominee, winning only hours after Rep. Mike Emmer (R-MN) won the nomination and later withdrew in the face of deepening opposition.
Johnson, the vice chair of the Republican conference, entered the race for the first time Saturday, ultimately finishing second to Emmer in Tuesday’s first round of balloting.
“My theme is simply trust and teamwork,” Johnson said Monday of his pitch to his colleagues. “We have to get back on track.”
That message resonated with the conference as the reliable conservative earned support across the ideological spectrum.
Republicans now must formulate a plan to take Johnson’s nomination to the floor.
This is a developing story.
