New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) said Monday that the country’s largest city was having a “very good day” as the rate of new Chinese coronavirus cases drops.
De Blasio said in his daily press conference that NYC Health + Hospitals had 835 ICU admissions on Saturday, down from 857 admissions Friday. On Saturday, the city recorded 383 new hospitalizations, down from 463 additional admissions the day prior, the mayor stated:
“That’s a really meaningful improvement. That’s a step in the right direction,” he said. “This is a very good day.”
Despite the positive developments, de Blasio still urged residents to continue social distancing measures suggested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
“We want the numbers to go down a lot,” said the mayor. “We’ve got to see them all move down in unison over a prolonged period of time to be able to get to that next phase where we have low-level transmission, and then we can start on the path to a more normal life.”
As of Monday, New York State has 188,694 confirmed coronavirus cases and 9,385 deaths, while 17,089 have recovered, according to data tracked by Johns Hopkins University.
