A Mississippi couple is donating hundreds of small American flags to children so they can continue reciting the Pledge of Allegiance while school is canceled.
“It’s a way for children to have some normalcy in their day,” Brenda McIntyre told WAPT. “To start their school day, they are going to be doing at home and say the Pledge of Allegiance and do the routine.”
Brenda and her husband, Jim McIntyre, are making deliveries but said families can pick up the flags curbside from A Complete Flag Source in Jackson during the coronavirus pandemic.
They are also handing out car decals to promote unity.
In South Carolina, Spartanburg County Junior ROTC cadets at Chesnee and Boiling Springs high schools take a turn reciting the Pledge on video, which the district then puts on its Facebook page for use at home, according to WYFF.
“We really need all the help we can get,” cadet Christopher Fuller told the news station.
In Grand Rapids, Michigan, Kenowa Hills high school teacher Todd Johnston continues to lead the Pledge for neighborhood kids at the end of his driveway.
“The idea for this came from so many elementary families in our neighborhood where moms and dads are now homeschool teachers and they needed a routine,” he told Fox 17.
“I’m pretty proud of respectfully doing the Pledge of Allegiance in our high school every day,” he added.
“In a time where it all feels kind of grim, it’s honoring our country and it lifts our spirits every morning to have our boys go out and say the pledge,” mother Tara Follett said to the outlet.
“This two minutes of sincerity is a great way to start our day together,” Johnston said.
