House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said during a press conference on Tuesday that President Donald Trump was working to fight the coronavirus outbreak while Democrats were impeaching him.

McCarthy contended that the president has taken action since the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak while Democrats were working to impeach the president. He said:

The president realizes that this is a very deadly disease. That’s why he’s taken the action to stop the flights from China to America when a lot of people across the aisle criticized him for doing it, but that was a very smart move. The president then offered to send our scientists, our doctors, into China to help China combat this. Again, declined the ability for this president to take those action. The president has put the CDC [Centers for Disease Control], NIH [National Institutes of Health], and the military meetings as early as January. You’ve watched the president’s administration come to this Capitol early in January to prep and brief the entire Congress and Senate about the coronavirus and what was coming. He’s taken this very seriously from day one.

“Unfortunately, you didn’t hear about it or read about it because, at that moment in time, the majority party was spending their time impeaching the president,” McCarthy added.

The California Republican’s press conference follows as Trump announced significant proposals to alleviate those suffering economically from the novel coronavirus.

Trump said that he would meet with congressional leaders on Tuesday to discuss a payroll tax cut, financial assistance for hourly workers, loans for small businesses, and financial aid for the airline and cruise industries.

The president said, “We are going to take care of and have been taking care of the American public and the American economy.”
