House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) willingly accepted dirt on President Donald Trump from a man he was pranked into believing was a Ukrainian parliamentarian, and Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) is not about to let him forget that.
Gaetz has tweeted over the past several days video clips and articles recalling how two Russian radio hosts tricked Schiff into thinking he was speaking to a Ukrainian parliamentarian with dirt on Trump in April 2017.
Instead of directing the parliamentarian straight to the FBI, Schiff took the call and expressed interest in hearing and receiving whatever dirt the parliamentarian had on Trump — including purported nude pictures.
Schiff, in recent weeks, has accused Trump of seeking dirt from Ukraine on Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden, who sat on the board of a Ukrainian company whose owner was under investigation.
As Schiff discussed his accusations on network news on Sunday, Gaetz tweeted: “@RepAdamSchiff is a hypocrite.”
Gaetz continued his broadside against Schiff this week with several more tweets.
Ranking Republican Devin Nunes (R-CA) also brought up the prank call in a committee hearing last week during his opening remarks when he listed six examples of Democrats seeking dirt on Trump from Ukraine.
“Democrats on this very committee negotiated with people who they thought were Ukrainians in order to obtain nude pictures of Trump,” Nunes said in reference to Schiff.
In April 2017, Schiff took a call from radio personalities Vladimir “Vovan” Kuznetzov and Alexey “Lexus” Stolyarov. Kuznetzov posed as Andriy Parubiy, who was the chairman of Ukraine’s parliament at the time.
“Thank you, chairman, I appreciate the opportunity to speak to you,” Schiff said. “I would just caution that our Russian friends may be listening to the conversation, so I wouldn’t share anything you wouldn’t want them to hear.”
Kuznetzov told Schiff that a female Russian agent obtained “compromising material” on Trump after their “short relations,” according to a recording of the call.
“What’s the nature of the kompromat?” Schiff asked.
“Well, there are pictures of the naked Trump,” Kuznetzov said.
“And the materials you can provide to the committee or to the FBI — would they corroborate this allegation?” Schiff asked.
“Sure, of course,” Kuznetzov responded.
Schiff sounded as if he was taking notes during the call, asking for them to repeat some details. “I’ll have my staff follow up to get spellings and more details on that.”
Schiff also told him it would be “best” for him to provide materials to both his committee and the FBI.
Schiff’s office reportedly told reporters that Schiff suspected the call was fake from the beginning, but the Daily Mail reported that the pranksters had emails showing Schiff’s staff tried to make follow up arrangements.
“I understand Mr. Schiff had a productive call with Mr. Parubiy, and that Mr. Parubiy would like to make some material available to Mr. Schiff through your embassy,” a Schiff aide wrote.
“Please let me know how best to arrange pick-up of those materials from your Embassy in Washington, D.C.”
