The March for Our Lives gun control movement is calling for the registration of all guns and implementation of “mandatory” buybacks of certain guns.
Axios reports registration and buybacks are simply two of the controls being pushed as a part of a “Peace Plan” by the group that formed after the February 14, 2018, Parkland high school attack.
The rest of their plan includes “[raising] the age to buy a gun from 18 to 21,” creating a national license requirement for gun owners, “[banning] assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and putting a “director of national gun violence prevention” in place.
March for Our Lives also wants to create a “Safety Corps,” comparable to the Peace Corps, but designed specifically for fighting gun violence.
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) was in the race for the Democrat presidential nomination for just over 90 days. During that time his central push was for mandatory buybacks, like those now being pushed by March for Our Lives. Such buybacks mandate that gun owners hand over certain firearms to the government, at which time they receive a portion of the gun’s value in the form of a check.
Gun control advocate David Hogg tweeted about the March for Our Lives gun control demands, writing: “Policymakers have failed, so survivors are stepping up. …We’re not just fighting against the status quo, we’re fighting for real change, for justice, for peace.”
