Democrat presidential hopeful and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio took to Twitter on Monday to criticize President Donald Trump’s response to the pair of mass shootings that occured over the weekend.
“Trump is too busy blaming the ‘fake news media’ and people with mental illness to speak the truth: we’re facing an epidemic caused by white supremacy and easy access to military-grade weapons,” de Blasio wrote.
He added, “The truth is plain as day. Open your eyes and grow a damn spine, @realDonaldTrump.”
In a separate tweet, de Blasio insisted a “BILL that will make every city safer” is the best way to “avoid sending ‘thoughts and prayers’ to the wrong city.”
In a speech from the White House on Monday, President Trump condemned white supremacy and called for Americans to unite around multiple proposals to help identify and prevent future mass shootings.
More than 30 people have died since the two mass shootings occurred in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday and another in Dayton, Ohio, the following day.
