Former Vice President Joe Biden was interrupted by protesters during Wednesday evening’s 2020 Democrat presidential debate with chants of “3 million deportations,” a reference to the number of deportations under the Obama administration.
According to Los Angeles Times reporter Melissa Gomez, Cosecha Movement, a national immigrant “justice” group, said the protesters planned to interrupt Biden during the debate. Ofelia, one of the protesters, told Gomez in a statement: “We cannot allow history to repeat itself.”
The protest prompted CNN moderators to halt the debate until the chants subsided.
When pressed by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on whether he agreed with the deportations, Biden passed the buck.
“I was vice president. I am not the president,” the former vice president replied, placing the blame on his former boss, then-President Barack Obama.
However, that answer wasn’t good enough for Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ).
“You invoke Pres. Obama more than anybody in this campaign,” Booker told Biden. “You can’t do it when it’s convenient and then dodge it when it’s not.”
