House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) suggested that pro-life individuals are hypocrites who do not want “clean air, clean water” and oppose “family planning” during an appearance at a health care forum at East Los Angeles College Monday.

Pelosi told the crowd that she did not intend to be a “fear-monger” but described the pro-life movement sweeping the states as overwhelmingly “scary” and “dangerous.”

“I don’t want to be a fear-monger, but this is scary. This is really dangerous what they’re trying to do to a woman’s right to choose,” Pelosi said.

Using age-old talking points, Pelosi accused pro-life individuals of being hypocritical in nature.

It’s a funny thing because they don’t believe in governance, they don’t want clean air, clean water, food safety — all those things that governments do, they don’t want this, they don’t want that, but they — Big government when it comes to a woman’s right to choose. Big government there. So this, we have a fight on our hands.

Many pro-life individuals do not consider pro-life laws a “big government” issue, arguing that the government is working well within its bounds by preserving, protecting, and defending the unalienable rights of an individual unable to defend himself or herself.

Pelosi took her accusations a step further, accusing pro-life individuals of opposing basic “family planning.”

But I’ll tell you this one thing, for 25 years, my first 25 years in the Congress, I was banging my head up against a brick wall trying to say to people, ‘They don’t support family planning,’ nobody would believe that. Until just a few years ago they decided they were going, when they had the majority, they would take away all the funding for Planned Parenthood. They don’t believe in family planning.

“So it’s not just about terminating a pregnancy, it’s about preventing money going to people — If you don’t like terminating a pregnancy you should love family planning right?” Pelosi added. “But they do not support that.”

Figures show Pelosi’s remarks are patently false, but her assessment inadvertently reveals the progressive left’s main objective: The focus is abortion – not women’s health.

Most pro-life individuals do not object Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and Rural Health Clinics (RHCs), which vastly outnumber Planned Parenthood facilities by thousands. The clinics offer the same health services for women, minus abortion.

Pelosi made no mention of those health clinics, which reportedly serve over 21 million people a year.
