Former Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign responded Tuesday to the attacks from President Donald Trump during his trip to Japan.
“The president’s comments are beneath the dignity of the office,” Deputy Campaign Manager Kate Bedingfield wrote in a statement. “To be on foreign soil, on Memorial Day, and to side repeatedly with a murderous dictator against a fellow American and former Vice President speaks for itself.”
Biden’s campaign was mostly silent over Memorial Day weekend despite Trump’s mockery of Biden on Twitter on Saturday.
Trump ridiculed Biden as a “swampman” from Washington whom Kim Jong-un described as a “low-IQ” individual.
Brandon English, a senior advisor for Biden’s campaign, appeared baffled by the president’s taunt at the time.
On Monday, Trump also ripped Biden for his role in passing the crime bill.
Bedingfield criticized the “pattern” of Trump embracing “autocrats” like Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un, accusing Trump of sharing “love letters” with the North Korean dictator as he continued diplomacy with the rogue regime.
When asked if he regretted hitting Biden while he was overseas, Trump repeated that he agreed with Kim.
“Well, Kim Jong Un made a statement that Joe Biden is a low-IQ individual. He probably is, based on his record,” Trump replied. “I think I agree with him on that.”
He added that Biden and the Obama administration was a “disaster” for the United States.
Biden also has a history of criticizing Trump overseas, since Democrats lost the 2016 election.
In February, Biden described American policies under Trump as “an embarrassment”
“While I cannot speak today as an elected government official who is able to set policy, I can speak as a citizen. I can offer insight into my country. I know we’ve heard a lot today about leadership, but in my experience, leadership only exists if somebody — and others — are with you. Leadership in the absence of people who are with you is not leadership,” he said.
