Former Vice President Joe Biden launched a dramatic campaign kick-off rally on Saturday, but he now appears to be coasting on a positive polling and fundraising high.
“I promise you this – no one – no one – is going to work longer and campaign harder to win your trust and support than this son of Catherine Eugenia and Joseph Biden!” Biden boasted in his speech on Saturday in Philadelphia.
But other than a pair of fundraisers earlier in the week, Biden has not held any campaign events this week or done any media interviews about his campaign.
Biden attended an afternoon fundraiser in Miami on Monday and an evening fundraiser in Coral Gables on Tuesday.
On Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, Biden was absent from the campaign trail.
On Tuesday, when 2020 Democrats such as Bernie Sanders, Amy Klobuchar, Pete Buttigieg were joining pro-abortion protestors in Washington, DC to protest abortion restrictions, the Biden campaign released a video of the former Vice President voicing his support.
As Biden already enjoys prominent name recognition around the country, he does not have to work as hard.
Buttigieg, for example, began the week with a Fox News town hall on Sunday, a Florida fundraiser and a Telemundo interview on Monday, joined pro-abortion protests in DC on Tuesday, traveled to New York for a town hall event at LaGuardia Community College, a conversation with the New York Times editorial board and conversation with Washington Post columnist Jonathan Capehart on Wednesday followed by a conversation with Washington Post reporter Robert Costa in Washington, DC on Thursday. On Friday and Saturday Buttigieg has six events scheduled in New Hampshire.
But Biden is taking a slower approach.
Earlier in May, Biden told donors at a Los Angeles fundraiser that he was taking it slow.
“This is a marathon,” he said. “I know all that polling stuff looks good but it is a marathon and we have a long way to go.”
Biden has also used the length of the Democratic race as a way to excuse himself from basic policy proposals.
“I’m going to be very clear about it as I move along and go into great detail as we get down the road here, because this is a marathon,” Biden said last week in New Hampshire.
