House Freedom Caucus member Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) slammed fellow Freedom Caucus Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI), suggesting that House Republicans have become “very, very frustrated” with Amash’s call for President Donald Trump’s impeachment.
Rep. Amash, a libertarian-leaning congressman, sparked controversy by sending a series of tweets saying President Trump’s actions warranted obstruction of justice charges and impeachment proceedings.
Green said that Amash’s comments served as a cynical move to garner media attention.
“Most of us think this is some kind of press stunt,” Green said, adding that House Republicans feel “very, very frustrated” by Amash’s comments.
Green said that although it was “healthy” to have dissent within the GOP, Amash gave the Democrats and the leftist media a “talking point.”
“He clearly is creating more media on this and basically emphasizing stuff that isn’t even there, and it’s very clear that the Democrats’ agenda is to investigate the president,” Green added.
Green’s remarks follow a Monday night meeting wherein the House Freedom Caucus formally condemned Amash’s call for impeachment.
“Based on who was there – and our board meeting was probably over 30 members – every single member disagrees and strongly with the position Justin took over the week,” Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), a former Freedom Caucus chairman, said Monday.
Amash’s comments drew strong condemnations from across the Republican Party, including House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA), Republican National Committee (RNC) chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC).
Graham said that Amash’s call for impeaching Trump had “zero” impact on the GOP.
“I don’t think anybody’s going to follow his lead. I don’t think there’s going to be a stampede based on what Amash says … When five Democrats voted with us to impeach Clinton they were not exactly hailed as heroes,” the South Carolina senator said.
