The Washington Post gave former Vice President Joe Biden “two Pinocchios” for the “half true” statement that he had “one of the most progressive” records of any 2020 presidential candidate.
Biden claimed in March that he was one of the more “progressive” Democrats running for president this cycle, suggesting he has more progressive views than Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), both of whom have called for Medicare for All and the Green New Deal, which Biden has not endorsed.
“I was always labeled as one of the most liberal members of the United States Congress. If it makes you progressive to mean that you are for Medicare for All or it makes it progressive, then that wasn’t the standard of what constituted in the past what is progressive,” Biden also said in April:
Biden has served as a more moderate senator than Sanders and Warren and recently has criticized calls for single-payer health care. The Delaware Democrat said he does not support Medicare for All because the “the vast majority of people are satisfied with their own healthcare system today.”
Biden, however, did add that he endorsed “making a Medicare option available to all,” which some Democrats have floated as a more feasible alternative to single-payer health care. The former vice president said he wants to let Americans keep their own private insurance plans.
To counter the rising Democrat interest in the Green New Deal, Biden also recently promised that America needs a “green revolution” to tackle climate change.
Biden said, “We do need to finish this green revolution, and we can do it in a way that’s rational. We can do it, afford it, and get it done now.”
