Democrat 2020 candidate Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke attacked President Donald Trump’s foreign policy as making Americans less safe.
O’Rourke appeared on MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show Monday, where he called President Trump’s foreign policy a “complete disaster for the United States and for the world.” He claimed the president has made America “less, not more, safe.”
The presidential hopeful claimed the president “sought to cover up or obstruct justice and prevent us from understanding the truth.” This claim came despite Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report finding no collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia in the 2016 election, nor obstruction of justice.
O’Rourke did mention the Mueller report and further suggest nefarious intentions in a call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin after the report was released, saying, “The first phone calls he makes is to Vladimir Putin, with whom he spends an hour on the phone, to whom he describes the entire investigation as a hoax.”
“If that’s not a green light for further intervention and involvement in our democracy, I don’t know what is,” he went on.
O’Rourke accused the president of “cozying up to strong men like Putin or [Phillipine President Rodrigo] Duterte or [Turkish President Recep Tayyip] Erdogan or [Egyptian President Abdel Fattah] el Sisi, his signal to the world as to there’s an open question about whether the future is authoritarian or democratic.” He claimed President Trump has “turned his back on our allies, on our friends, on those connections that we have forged in sacrifice, that have made us so strong.”
