President Donald Trump defended his new tariffs on Chinese products in the ongoing trade battle on Tuesday, promising that a deal was on the horizon.
“We can make a deal with China tomorrow before their companies start leaving so as not to lose USA business, but the last time we were close they wanted to renegotiate the deal,” he wrote on Twitter. “No way!”
Trump argued that the strong economy put the United States in a good position for a trade battle, urging patience as both sides escalated tariffs.
“It will all happen, and much faster than people think!” he wrote.
Trump predicted that China would eventually lose the trade fight, noting the massive trade deficit.
“China buys MUCH less from us than we buy from them, by almost 500 Billion Dollars, so we are in a fantastic position,” he wrote.
He noted that tariffs on Chinese steel had helped rebuild America’s steel industry and that companies could easily escape the new tariffs by building their products in the United States.
“Make your product at home in the USA and there is no Tariff,” he wrote. “You can also buy from a non-Tariffed country instead of China.”
Trump said that the Federal Reserve should monitor the Chinese monetary response and ensure the strength of the American economy in the coming months
“China will be pumping money into their system and probably reducing interest rates, as always, in order to make up for the business they are, and will be, losing,” he wrote. “If the Federal Reserve ever did a ‘match,’ it would be game over, we win! In any event, China wants a deal!”

Trump also sent a special message to farmers, arguing that they would benefit from successful trade negotiations with China.
“Our great Patriot Farmers will be one of the biggest beneficiaries of what is happening now,” he wrote. “Hopefully China will do us the honor of continuing to buy our great farm product, the best, but if not your Country will be making up the difference based on a very high China buy.”
Trump said the money collected from the tariffs would help the United States purchase farm goods no longer being exported as a result of the trade battle.
“The Farmers have been “forgotten” for many years,” he wrote. “Their time is now!”
