Texas Democrat and 2020 candidate Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke promised about 140 people in Minnesota Wednesday that he would sign a new Voting Rights Act.
O’Rourke, in response to a crowd member’s question, decried “racist” voter ID laws, saying people can use a student ID to carry a firearm, but can’t use it to vote.
“We should have a new voting rights act that ensures that every single vote in this country counts,” said O’Rourke,who called for same-day registration and automatic voter registration.
He added that such an act should “end the process of gerrymandering altogether and, as the gentleman suggested earlier, get big money out of politics and then – yes let’s look at other ways to improve our democracy.”
