Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) introduced a resolution Tuesday that will force a vote this week on whether the House will refer Michael Cohen’s testimony to the DOJ regarding a perjury investigation.
Rep. Mark Green introduced H. Res. 304, a privileged resolution that will give the Democrat-controlled House 48 hours to vote on the resolution to refer Cohen’s testimony before the House Oversight and Reform Committee to the DOJ.
Staffers placed next to Green a sign that read, “62 days since Chairman [Elijah] Cummings promised accountability for Michael Cohen’s lies”:
Congressman Green and other Republican lawmakers contend that Cohen lied under oath six times while testifying before the committee in February.
Cohen was sentenced to jail for three years for lying to Congress previously; Cohen was President Donald Trump’s personal attorney.
The conservative Tennessee congressman said, “It is a Federal crime to provide false information to Congress and the failure to enforce this crime further undermines the integrity of the House.”
Cohen reportedly misled Congress during his February testimony when he said he “never” sought a pardon from President Trump; however, he later admitted through his lawyer that he sought a pardon and that his use of the word “never” did not mean never.
During his high-profile testimony in February, Cohen said, “I have lied, but I am not a liar.”
Congressman Green said earlier in April that if House Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) fails to refer Cohen’s testimony to the Justice Department, it will damage the committee’s reputation.
“If Chairman [Elijah] Cummings fails to refer Mr. Cohen to the Department of Justice for perjury, it will forever mar the reputation of the Oversight committee and call into question the integrity of the entire House,” Green said.
