Former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) lead by large margins in Iowa compared to other 2020 presidential candidates, according to a poll released on Monday.
An Emerson poll released on Monday found that Biden has 25 percent of Iowa Democrats’ support, Sanders has 24 percent, and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg has 11 percent support, showcasing a surge for the Indiana Democrat.
The Iowa Emerson poll mirrors similar results from a national Emerson poll which found that Biden and Sanders lead the 2020 Democrat presidential primaries.
Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), the only other candidate with double-digit support, has ten percent support amongst Iowa Democrats.
Spencer Kimball, director of the Emerson poll, said that “the biggest surprise in this poll is Mayor Pete, last week we saw him inching up in our national poll, and now he’s in double digits in Iowa, America is going to be asking who is ‘Mayor Pete’?”
Emerson’s last poll in January found that Biden had 29 percent support, with Harris at 18 percent, Sanders at 15 percent, while Buttigieg had zero percent polling.
Sanders maintains a strong lead amongst Iowa youth, with the Vermont senator gaining 44 percent support from Iowans ranged 18-29 years-old, and Buttigieg gets 22 percent from the same age group. Biden leads among all other age groups with 32 percent among 30-49-year-olds, 29 percent among 50-64 year-olds, and 31 percent among those 65 and older.
Kimball said that the strong youth support for Buttigieg could serve as a problem for Sanders.
“If Buttigieg is able to maintain his momentum, his candidacy appears to be pulling from the same demographic of young voters as Sanders, and that could become a problem for Sanders,” Kimball suggested.
In a match-up between President Donald Trump and 2020 Democrat presidential candidates, Trump only loses to Biden and Sanders.
In the match-ups:
- Donald Trump receives 47 percent support, while Biden receives 53 percent amongst Iowa voters.
- Donald Trump 49 percent support, while Bernie Sanders receives 51 percent.
- Donald Trump gains 51 percent support, while Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) obtains 49 percent.
- Donald Trump wins 52 percent support, while Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) gains 48 percent.
- Donald Trump gains 54 percent support, while Harris receives 46 percent.
President Donald Trump said he would “love” to run against Biden, Bernie, and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX).
“I wouldn’t mind. I mean, I’d love to have Biden. I’d love to have Bernie. I’d love to have Beto,” Trump said in a recent interview. “I mean, Beto seems to be the one that the press has chosen. The press seems to have chosen Beto.”
