Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) signed legislation Friday to criminalize private gun sales but 25 of New Mexico’s 33 counties have made clear they have no intention of enforcing it.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that 25 counties have declared “Second Amendment Sanctuary” status as a way of affirming that their county governments stand behind a sheriff’s decision to not enforce the gun control.
On March 2, Breitbart News reported that 21 of New Mexico’s 33 counties had declared themselves “Second Amendment Sanctuaries.
Those 21 counties:
- Valencia County
- Sandoval County
- Eddy County
- Chaves County
- Otero County
- Lincoln County
- Quay County
- Union County
- Socorro County
- San Juan County
- Catron County
- Curry County
- Hidalgo County
- Sierra County
- Grant County
- Torrance County
- Rio Arriba County
- De Baca County
- Roosevelt County
- Harding County
- Luna County
Twenty-nine of New Mexico’s 33 sheriffs have also signed a statement against Gov. Grisham’s gun control. And the New Mexico Sheriff’s Association indicated it planned to sue the state if the new gun control was enacted.
Grisham pushed gun control throughout her gubernatorial campaign. On March 29, 2018, Breitbart News reported that she called for a ban on “high magazine cartridges.”
