Chinese and U.S. trade negotiators began another round of meetings in D.C. Thursday. On Friday President Donald Trump met in the Oval Office with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He. Liu participated in this set of D.C. meetings as special envoy for Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The U.S. and China have been locked in 90-days of intensive negotiations that began when Presidents Trump and Xi met on December 1 at the G20 Argentina. The two agreed to a temporary truce on tariffs increases during these negotiations.

“Speaking for the United States, I would say it’s probably more likely that a deal does happen,” president Trump said Friday of forging a trade deal with China. He added that he will “probably” meet with president Xi at Mar-a-Lago in March and signaled to Liu that he is open to extending the tariff truce in light of it. The two presidents are expected to nail down at that meeting what Trump called the “finer points” of a trade deal.

Trump and Xi held their first meeting after Trump took office at Mar-a-Lago in April 2017.

“We have a deal on currency and currency manipulation,” the president additionally confirmed Friday.
