Six New Mexico counties are reacting to the state-level push for a red flag law and universal background checks by making clear they will not enforce the new gun controls.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that the counties are doing this via “Second Amendment Sanctuary” resolutions. So far the counties of Eddy, Curry, Quay, Union, Socorro, and San Juan, have adopted the resolutions.
Moreover, the New Mexico Sheriffs’ Association plans to sue if the red flag law, universal background checks, and other gun controls become law.
On February 10, 2019, Breitbart News reported that 29 of New Mexico’s 33 sheriffs signed a statement against adoption of the new gun controls. CBS 7 quoted Lea County Sheriff Corey Helton saying, “You’re just taking guns out of law-abiding citizen’s hands. This is not going to affect the criminals out there. They’re going to be able to get guns and they do not follow the law.”
State Rep. Joy Garratt (D) is the sponsor of the red flag/gun confiscation legislation. She defends her confiscatory push by claiming that a red flag law could have prevented the February 14, 2018, Parkland high school shooting. She does not mention that California’s red flag law did not prevent the November 7, 2018, attack on Borderline Bar & Grill nor that Florida’s post-Parkland red flag law failed to stop the August 26, 2018, Jacksonville Landing attack and the January 23, 2019, shooting at SunTrust bank in Sebring.
More recently, on February 15, 2019, Illinois’ red flag law failed to prevent the shooting deaths of five at Henry Pratt Company.
