President Donald Trump declared at a rally stage in El Paso, Texas, Monday night that regardless of whether Congress makes progress on a funding deal, “We’re building the wall anyway.”

“I have to tell you, as I was walking up to the stage, they said that progress is being made with this committee,” Trump told the packed crowd of thousands. He had said earlier in the rally that the venue holds around 6,000, but fire officials had allowed around 10,000 for the Make America Great Again rally.

“Just so you know, we’re building the wall anyway,” the president declared to cheers from the crowd.

“They’re saying that progress has been made with this deal, just now,” he said of legislators negotiating a government funding bill. “I said wait a minute, I gotta take care of my people from Texas, I got to go. I don’t even want to hear about it.”

“I don’t know what they mean progress is being made, significant,” said Trump. “Now what did happen is the Democrats were being hit really hard on the concept of releasing criminals into our society. That has not been playing well.”

“So maybe progress has been made, maybe not, but I had a choice. I could have stayed out there and listened or I could have come out to the people of El Paso and Texas,” he revealed. “I chose you.”

The crowd responded by chanting, “We chose you.”

“So we probably have good news, who knows,” said the president. “We’re setting the stage, folks.”

President Trump said America proudly welcomes those who come legally into the United States.
