President Donald Trump somehow received more support from Democrats than Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and former Rep. Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke (D-TX) in Tuesday’s ABC News/Washington Post 2020 primary poll.
Former Vice President Joe Biden, who reportedly said on Monday that he is closer to making his 2020 decision, led with 9%. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) was next with 8%, followed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) with 4%, O’Rourke with 3%, and Warren with 2%. Former First Lady Michelle Obama got 2% and former First Lady and failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton also received 1% along with Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ).
But the pollsters noted that 4% of Democrats “came up with an unusual choice for the Democratic nominee – Donald Trump.”
Trump won 8% of Democrats in 2016, and his support from Democrats in key battleground states like Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania was instrumental in his shocking win.
The pollsters also noted that “asked in an open- ended question whom they’d support in a primary or caucus today, 43 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents have no opinion,” reflecting the uncertain nature of the 2020 race.
The open-ended poll asked Democrats: “If the 2020 Democratic primary or caucus in your state were being held today, for whom would you vote?”
The poll was “conducted by landline and cellular telephone Jan. 21-24, 2019, in English and Spanish,” and its margin of error is +/- 3.5 percentage points.
