Newly elected House Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-TX) joined the open borders, George Soros-funded Border Network for Human Rights on Saturday to protest President Donald Trump’s plan for a border wall, telling the crowd that she will “fight every single day” against the wall and its “cruelty.”
When asked about protecting Americans from the ongoing surge of illegal immigration into the state and country, Escobar, who held a town hall before she joined the protest, said she did not know the answer.
The El Paso Times reported:
Escobar said there is no, quick, easy answer but she is hopeful that members of Congress who are knowledgeable about the border and the region can lead the discussion.
“The easy, quick answer for me is — we don’t engage in cruelty,” she said.
“Thank you for being here, for having a voice of compassion,” Escobar told the protesters. “I am going to fight every single day for compassionate, humane and just immigration reform, and I am with you 100 percent.”
Escobar also indicated that Trump’s agreement to temporarily fund the government until February 15 to allow for negotiations regarding the border wall will not diminish Democrats’ resolve against securing the border.
The Times noted that some of the marchers chanted, “Trump escucha, estámos en la lucha” (which translates to “Listen, Trump, we are in the fight”) — and carried banners saying, “No Border Wall” and “Immigrant Rights are Human Rights.”
One protester wore a T-shirt emblazoned with “#Resisting the Wall.”
A video posted with the El Paso Times article shows a Native American protester dressed in traditional garb chanting “Viva La Raza” (which means “Live the Race”).
The outlet spoke to one marcher, Irma Zacarias, but did not reveal her immigration status.
“We are many people, we are not delinquents, but productive people,” Zacarias said. “And instead of taking away from the government, we are contributing.”
“We are all immigrants,” Zacarias said.
