New York lawmakers are weighing a 30-day waiting period for background checks on all firearm sales.
This would expand the current 3-day wait by another 27 days.
The Buffalo News reports that waiting period expansion goes beyond the 10-day period Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) is pushing. It provide that firearm purchases who do not receive an immediate green light on their background check may be undergo a check for up 30 days.
A background check currently has three possible outcomes, it can return green light the buyer, fail the buyer, or return without a green light while also lacking any criminal information to prevent the sale. In the latter situation federal law allows up to three days for reviewers to continue looking, after which the would-be purchaser can take possession of his gun. NY lawmakers want to extend those three days to 30.
Lawmakers are also posed to pass a red flag law allowing court orders for gun confiscation in NY. Gov. Cuomo launched a push for such a law via a bus tour in the Summer of 2018.
