President Donald Trump called out General Motors Thursday for cutting jobs and closing North American plants, whereas other automakers, such as BMW, are pouring into the United States.
“General Motors is very counter to what other auto, and other, companies are doing,” Trump wrote in a morning tweet:
“Big Steel is opening and renovating plants all over the country. Auto companies are pouring into the U.S., including BMW, which just announced a major new plant,” he went on. “The U.S.A. is booming!”
American consumer preference toward SUVs and trucks and away from cars prompted GM to announce this week that it will shut down plants in Michigan, Ohio, Maryland, and Ontario next year. The action is expected to end more than 14,000 jobs.
BMW chief executive Harald Krueger revealed Tuesday from the Los Angeles Auto Show that the company is looking at establishing a second manufacturing plant in the United States. The announcement comes after indication that the Trump administration may impose more tariffs on auto imports. CNBC reported that Krueger further said he supports the U.K. exit from the European Union.
U.S. GDP growth hit a banner 4.1 percent in the second quarter, and the government indicated in a Wednesday report that growth was still strong in July and September.
