Republican Katie Arrington’s Democrat opponent Joe Cunningham in South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District says he does not support building a border wall on the United States’ southern border.

During a recent debate, Cunningham said he opposed Trump’s proposed border wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, saying he opposes it because it will cost “billions of dollars.”

“Nothing is more important to me than keeping your family safe, keeping my family safe. We’re a nation of immigrants, but we’re also a nation of laws,” Cunningham said. “We need tough, smart border security. Not border security that just looks tough but is tough.” Cunningham continued:

Now, we built walls in the 1500s because that’s the only technology we have. Now, we have highly-trained border personnel, we have drones, we have satellite imagery, we can control the border at a fraction of the cost. I don’t think we need to be spending billions of dollars on a wall. I’d rather spend those billions of dollars here in the Lowcountry, building our infrastructure … fix the issues here in the Lowcountry, that’s the best use of tax dollars.

In her latest attack ad, Arrington notes Cunningham’s campaigning with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, who supports sanctuary cities for criminal illegal aliens and amnesty.

“An MS-13 killer arrested in the Lowcountry, a caravan of illegal immigrants marching on our border, Joe Cunningham? Campaigning with the sanctuary city mayor of LA,” the ad states.

Arrington touts her endorsements from all five sheriffs in the Lowcountry and her support for Trump’s proposed border wall, intended to stop illegal immigration.

In an August poll by a left-leaning polling firm, Arrington led Cunningham by seven percentage points.
