Gwinnett County, Georgia, police officer Antwan Toney was shot and killed Saturday while responding to a suspicious vehicle call.

The shots were fired from the reported vehicle, and the vehicle quickly fled the scene.

Fox4KC reports “there were as many as four people inside the car.”

Toney was approaching the vehicle when the shots were fired and he was struck once. Sgt. Jake Smith indicated that whoever fired the fatal shot had the element of surprise and was able to shoot Toney before either he or partner could even unholster their guns.

WSB-TV’s Tony Thomas reports that police have leads but not arrest warrants have been issued:

Thomas indicates that suspect’s car was on “Crumps Landing behind Shiloh Middle School” when Toney approached it.

Other officers arriving on scene opened fire on the vehicle but it is not known whether any of their bullets struck the car or a suspect.
