A recently widowed woman in Indiana took wedding photos in her bridal gown alone to honor her firefighter fiance killed by a drunk driver in the line of duty.

Jessica Padgett had dreamed of the day she would say “I do” to her fiance Kendall Murphy, but her dreams were shattered on November 10, 2017, when an alleged drunk driver struck the volunteer firefighter while he was helping a crash victim.

Ten months later, Padgett put on her wedding dress anyway.

Kendall’s mother, Katrina Murphy, reached out to a photographer shortly after her son’s death and asked her to do a photo shoot with Padgett on the couple’s planned wedding day to honor Kendall and help Padgett with the grieving process.

The photographer, Mandi Knepp, agreed and decided to set up a photo shoot for September 29, 2018—the day the wedding was scheduled.

Knepp photographed Padgett in her bridal gown, posing with several of her late husband’s belongings—including his helmet, firefighter’s uniform, and boots.

The National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service honored Kendall on Sunday in Washington, DC. Kendall was one of five Indiana firefighters honored at the ceremony.

The town of Montgomery also honored Kendall, deciding to light several buildings—including the Montgomery Fire Station and St. Peter Catholic Church—in a shade of red last week to honor his memory.
