Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) has an F-rating from the NRA and wants many new gun controls, including a national database of all firearm sales and firearm owners.
The Miami Herald reports that Nelson has an F-rating from the NRA and supports an “assault weapons” ban and barring 18-20 year olds from exercising their Second Amendment rights to purchase long guns.
Nelson also opposes national reciprocity for concealed carry. This opposition means your Second Amendment rights stop at your state’s border in Nelson’s mind; that you have no right to carry a gun for self-defense in any state but your state of residence.
Breitbart News reported that Nelson also supports universal background checks. Such checks outlaw private gun sales, criminalizing a neighbor for selling a gun to a neighbor or a co-worker for selling a gun to fellow employee.
Universal background checks require a national gun registry in order to be enforceable, and Nelson is already on record supporting a national database of all gun sales and gun owners. In 2014 he co-sponsored the Crime Gun Tracing Modernization Act, a bill intended to create a “searchable database of the importation, production, shipment, receipt, sale, or other disposition of firearms.”
Nelson voted against confirming pro-Second Amendment Justice Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court but the NRA-ILA reports he voted for Barack Obama’s “anti-gun nominees to the Supreme Court – including Sonia Sotomayor, who signed a Supreme Court opinion saying that Americans do not have an individual right to own firearms.”
