The prosecutor in Kent County, Michigan, indicates U.S. Army veteran Jaime Fredericks was justified in shooting and killing 44-year-old Robert Morgan.
Fredericks shot Morgan on August 12 and prosecutor Chris Becker ruled this week that the shooting was justified.
Michigan Live quotes Becker saying the incident was “fairly clear cut,” as it relates to self-defense.
On the night of the shooting, Morgan and some of his son’s friends were drinking around a bonfire, revving the engines on their vehicles, and making other loud noises long after bedtime. Morgan then allegedly began driving his jeep around the Fredericks’ home, whipping around corners and throwing rocks against the home.
Macy Fredericks went down to ask if he would stop driving around the house and Mogan responded with vulgarities.
Macy went back home and sat on her porch, only to have Morgan and others come to the house. Macy woke Jaime, who came outside, assessed the situation, and went back inside and grabbed his handgun.
Once Jaime re-emerged Morgan “called [him] a name and rushed him.” Jaime hit at Morgan to try to deflect the blow but two fell in the doorway, at which point a shot rang out. Jaime’s bullet hit Morgan in the stomach.
Prosecutor Becker noted, “Jamie told the sheriff’s detectives that he felt he had no other option than to shoot Mr. Morgan because he was being attacked in his own home.”
Jaime unloaded his gun and performed first aid on Morgan, but the shot proved fatal.
