Vice President Mike Pence promoted President Donald Trump’s clear stance on Iran evidenced by the President’s recent tweet to the Iranian President, as the Vice President gave remarks on Monday in Philadelphia.
At the “Tax Cuts to Put America First” event, Pence appeared to reference a Sunday evening tweet from President Trump with a warning to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani:
Rouhani had threatened President Trump with war after reports that Trump’s administration was seeking to disrupt Iran’s government in the face of looming sanctions. The Iranian president was giving a speech to Iranian diplomats when he said, “Mr. Trump, don’t play with the lion’s tail, this would only lead to regret.” He went on, “war with Iran is the mother of all wars.
Trump’s tweet directly addressed Rouhani with an all-caps warning to never threaten the United States again or Rouhani will suffer consequences akin to the worst in history. “WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!,” wrote President Trump.
House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer rebuked Trump for the tweet, accusing Trump of trying to distract from other news. MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donell claimed the tweet showed “panic.”
“And while the Iranian people have been standing up in the streets — standing up to their dictators in Tehran — this President put Iran on notice,” Pence told the tax cut event crowd.
“He canceled the Iran nuclear deal,” he continued. “And as he made clear again last night, we will no longer tolerate Iran’s sowing violence or terror across the world, and we will not tolerate threats against the United States of America.” The crowd met Pence’s remarks with applause.
The event with Vice President Pence was hosted by America First Policies.
