Marine veteran and Wisconsin businessman Kevin Nicholson’s campaign told Breitbart News in an exclusive statement on Monday that the “professional political class,” such as Wisconsin State Sen. Leah Vukmir, will not stop illegal immigration.
Kenosha News asked Wisconsin Senate Republican candidates what they thought about immigration reform.
Wisconsin State Sen. Leah Vukmir said:
We are either a nation of laws, or we are not. My father was an immigrant from Greece, and my mother’s parents were immigrants, too. Both families came the right way — legally. I want to ensure that the American dream stays alive for future generations, but we cannot do that with our current open-border policies.
“In the U.S. Senate, I will support the construction of a wall on the southern border and efforts to crack down on illegal immigration in the United States. I also oppose sanctuary cities in Wisconsin,” Vukmir added.
Nicholson told Kenosha News:
Democrat politicians have enabled illegal immigration because they seek to take advantage of illegal immigrants for cheap labor and cheap votes.
…
I support President Trump’s vision and plan to build a wall, at least along the most vulnerable parts of our southern border. We also need to create an economically sustainable, merit-based immigration program that ultimately promotes both the rights and responsibilities that come with legal citizenship.
Ronica Cleary, Nicholson’s campaign spokeswoman, told Breitbart News that the “professional political class” will do nothing to stop illegal immigration. Cleary said, “As a Marine, Kevin knows what it takes to build obstacles that work. We need to build a wall to stop illegal immigration. We cannot be weak or mealy-mouthed on this issue, and we know that the professional political class will never take care of this problem. Professional politicians encourage people to come here illegally in order to take advantage of them, and that needs to be stopped.”
Breitbart News reported that the Wisconsin Senate GOP primary has quickly become a race between the establishment-backed Vukmir and the anti-establishment Nicholson. Lame duck Speaker Paul Ryan, as well as Reps. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI), Sean Duffy (R-WI), and Glenn Grothman (R-WI), endorsed Vukmir for the U.S. Senate. The National Rifle Association (NRA) also backed Vukmir.
Ryan and Sensenbrenner’s op-ed does not mention immigration issues such as building President Donald Trump’s border wall with Mexico, stopping illegal immigration, or transitioning to a merit-based immigration system.
The Associated Press (AP) said that Vukmir was “at one time in her career a grassroots conservative who ended up aligning with the establishment over the past several years.”
A new poll from Marquette University Law School has Nicholson and Vukmir in a statistical tie for the U.S. Senate.
In contrast, Nicholson has capitalized on immigration and explained how his experience in the Marine Corps has shown him that barriers do stop illegal migration.
“[On] the construction of a physical barrier, I’m a former combat engineer in the Marine Corps, and barriers work,” he told Breitbart News Sunday. “They do stop people from crossing them, and that is the entire idea behind them.”
In Nicholson’s first campaign ad, he slammed establishment politicians for failing to fund President Trump’s proposed border wall with Mexico.
“The fact that Congress won’t build President Trump’s wall, won’t repeal Obamacare, and refuses to end illegal immigration, it’s a disgrace to everything we ever fought for,” Nicholson charged:
