A man who allegedly posed as a delivery driver and stole items worth thousands of dollars from casinos on the Las Vegas strip is in custody, police said.
Police said Danny Roy Salazar, 44, wore a lanyard and sometimes carried a clipboard with him as he skulked through the rear entrances of hotels such as the Rio, Caesars Palace, and Westgate between January 13 and June 8, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
“If you know the language, know the lingo and look like you can belong, you can belong,” Douglas Florence, a longtime security analyst, told the Review-Journal about the suspect’s disguise.
A criminal complaint states that Salazar allegedly stole mattresses, furniture, beauty products, and electronic devices such as iPads.
Police say Salazar also stole an $86,000 Isuzu Penske box truck from outside a hotel on the strip six months ago. The real delivery driver who rented the vehicle reportedly left the engine running, the report said.
Salazar faces six counts each of grand larceny of property worth more than $3,500 and burglary. He is being held on $120,000 bond in the Clark County Detention Center and is expected to appear in court on Wednesday.
Thieves have used a variety of disguises to pull off various heists. In 2016, Brazilian thieves disguised as government health workers conducting routine inspections of mosquitoes carrying Zika virus stole cash and electronics from a residence.
In 2014, crooks in California dressed up as construction workers to steal copper from homes and industrial sites.
