Agent Chase Bishop, 29, of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has turned himself in to police after inadvertently shooting a fellow bar patron on June 2 while off duty.
According to Denver Police Department spokesman Jay Casillas, Bishop is being held at a Denver detention center for investigation of second-degree assault. He is awaiting formal charges regarding the incident to be filed by District Attorney’s Office. Additional charges may be filed after testing determines whether alcohol was involved in the accident.
Bishop was caught on camera dancing in a bar during his off time. An ill-advised backflip sent his gun flying from its holster. When he bent to retrieve it, he inadvertently fired the weapon into the crowd. A fellow patron was struck and taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to their lower leg. According to the patron’s lawyer, the bullet struck a main artery. If someone at the bar had not quickly applied a tourniquet, the patron may have bled to death.
Neither the District Attorney’s Office nor the Denver FBI has commented on the pending investigation. Mile High Spirits, in contrast, has been very vocal. They want to know why an FBI agent was dancing in their bar with a deadly weapon. “It is shocking that the only shooting to ever occur at our establishment came about as a result of an FBI agent entering our distillery tasting room carrying a loaded firearm without our knowledge, in violation of our rules,” they said in a statement posted to Facebook.
