A majority of Americans oppose impeaching President Donald Trump in yet another national poll.
A Monmouth University poll found that 56% of Americans do not want Trump impeached compared to 39% who do. The poll found that support for impeachment has declined since last July, when 41% of Americans supported impeachment.
A Quinnipiac poll released last week found that 55% of Americans opposed impeachment even though 71% of Democrats wanted the House to start impeachment proceedings if Democrats regain control after November.
Though Democrats like Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) have been insisting that impeachment is the only path to take, party leaders like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), seeing the writing on the wall, have stated that impeachment talk would be a “gift” to Republicans in 2018.
“On the political side, I think it’s a gift to Republicans to talk about impeachment,” Pelosi said last week. “I have said over and over again that I don’t think we should be talking about impeachment. I’ve been very clear right from the start. There is a process at work that will either yield or not information that will be dispositive of that issue.”
Trump’s political allies are reportedly intent on making the 2018 midterms a referendum on impeachment to energize the GOP base.
The Monmouth poll was conducted April 26 to 30, and its margin of error is 3.5 percentage points.
