A nanny originally from the Dominic Republic was convicted this week of murdering a 2-year-old and 6-year-old whom she was supposed to be watching.
Yoselyn Ortega — who immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republican as a young adult — was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder after stabbing two of Marina and Kevin Krim’s children, six-year-old Lulu Krim and two-year-old Leo Krim, to death in October 2012, ABC News reports.
Ortega, in the 2012 Upper West Side, Manhattan attack, stabbed Lulu and Leo while Marina had taken Nessie, her other daughter, to swim lessons. Marina says that when she opened the door to the bathroom in the apartment, she saw her two children lying in pools of blood and lifeless. Next to them, with a knife, was Ortega, who proceeded to stab herself in the neck.
“I was destroyed. She killed my best friends,” Marina Krim told jurors when she took the stand.
That’s when Marina ran out of the Upper West Side apartment screaming, with Nessie, as the doorman to the building called the police.
The defense attempted to claim that Ortega was insane at the time of the murders, saying she suffered from “psychosis” and “dissociation.”
Following the conviction, jurors spoke to the media about their decision:
Ortega is set to the sentenced next month.
