Former FBI Director James Comey compared President Donald Trump to a jilted former lover, when asked to respond to his frequent comments on Twitter.
“I’m like a breakup he can’t get over,” Comey said. “I’m out there living my best life, and he wakes up in the morning and tweets at me.”
The former FBI director appeared for an interview with The Late Show opposite host Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night.
“He needs to move on, huh?” Colbert asked.
“Yeah you would think so,” Comey replied.
He noted that Trump had commented about him on Twitter at least 50 times, but dismissed the attacks.
“My first reaction is a shrug,” he said, but cautioned the American people to not grow “numb” to the president destroying the “norm” of leadership.
“It’s not OK for the president to say that a private citizen should be in jail,” he said.
Comey defended his decision to describe Trump in personal terms, including the length of his tie, the size of his hands, and “orange” skin, comments that Fox News reporter Chris Wallace described as “bitchy.”
“I’m trying to be an author … I’m trying to bring the reader with me … I’m trying to observe and report,” Comey said defensively, noting that his editor urged him to paint every scene in the book.
