President Donald Trump thanked California Governor Jerry Brown for sending the National Guard to the southern border of California, despite the governor’s refusal to allow them to enforce immigration laws.
“California Governor Jerry Brown is doing the right thing and sending the National Guard to the Border,” Trump wrote on Twitter on Thursday. “Thank you Jerry, good move for the safety of our Country!”
Brown accepted federal funding to add about 400 members of the National Guard to “combat transnational crime” but insisted that the troops would not be detaining illegal immigrants.
“This will not be a mission to build a new wall. It will not be a mission to round up women and children or detain people escaping violence and seeking a better life,” he specified in a letter to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. “The California National Guard will not be enforcing federal immigration laws.”
