Police in Memphis, Tennessee, have arrested a man and charged him with stabbing a woman at a bus stop because he “does not like gay people.”
Adding a level of the unusual to the case, police found that the alleged anti-gay suspect is a 39-year-old Memphis man named Gaylord Marcellus McDowell, WSB-TV reported.
The victim told police McDowell came at her “in attack mode” and that he did not stop threatening her even after she asked him to stop. The woman said McDowell only got more belligerent as the seconds ticked away.
Police stated that McDowell ultimately pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim in the chest just as a bus was nearing the stop. The woman jumped onto the bus to escape further attacks.
According to a police report, the suspect immediately admitted to the attack after he was confronted by officers.
“I already know what the police got me for, for that girl!” the report says McDowell told police. Officers also allegedly found him in possession of a knife. McDowell reportedly added, “That’s the same knife I had the other day.”
Police also said McDowell told them he did not know the victim, yet he insisted that she is gay. The report says McDowell then added that he does not like gay people.
The suspect was charged with attempted second-degree murder and is now being held on an $80,000 bond.
