The two-year-old German Shepherd who was shot three times while defending his owner in Des Moines, WA, returned home from the veterinarian’s office Sunday.

Rex, the hero German Shepherd who protected his teenage best friend from several home invaders last Wednesday, had surgery to repair the broken tibia on his left hind leg.

Rex went home Sunday wearing a large cone around his neck and is expected to make a full recovery, WJW reported.

Javier Mercado, Rex’s 16-year-old owner, said that he is going give extra attention to his companion after Rex risked his life to save him.

“That’s my little guy right there. That’s my best friend,” Javier told KCPQ. “He’s really traumatized; now fast reactions will scare him and kind of like, he’ll jump, but I think we will get through it, just work on it slowly.”

Rex will still need to visit the vet for physical therapy and massage therapy as he recovers from his injuries.

Rex’s family thanked those who donated money to cover the dog’s medical expenses, adding that they plan to save the remaining funds for his continued care.

The home invasion suspects are still at large.
