The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that the top 10 leading of causes of death in the USA as heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases, accidents (unintentional injuries), stroke (cerebrovascular diseases), alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, influenza and pneumonia, nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis, intentional self-harm (suicide).
They compiled their list using numbers from 2015 and those shows that firearms do not even enter the picture except for the percentage of suicides that are firearm-related.
The are approximately 20,000 firearm-related suicides each year. That means intentional firearm used played a role in approximately .9935% of total number of deaths resulting from the top 10 leading causes of death.
Here are the top ten causes of death and the number of deaths caused:
- Heart disease: 633,842
- Cancer: 595,930
- Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 155,041
- Accidents (unintentional injuries): 146,571
- Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 140,323
- Alzheimer’s disease: 110,561
- Diabetes: 79,535
- Influenza and pneumonia: 57,062
- Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 49,959
- Intentional self-harm (suicide): 44,193
The total number of deaths resulting from the top 10 leading causes of death is 2,013,017. Of those, the total number of intentional firearm-related deaths was approximately 20,000, which represents .9935% of all deaths resulting from the 10 top leading causes.
