An Alabama middle school history teacher is accused of having sex with a female student during school hours.
John Daniel Hamilton, 51, was arrested in Alabama Tuesday and charged with second-degree sodomy and engaging in sexual activity with a student as a school employee, WKRG reported.
If convicted, Hamilton faces up to 20 years behind bars for the felony charges.
Baldwin County District Attorney Bob Wilters announced in a press conference that another student told police about the alleged relationship between Hamilton and the female student that took place at Central Baldwin Middle School in Robertsdale.
Investigators conducted a two-week probe into the incident and found that Hamilton and his victim committed several sex acts in his classroom during school hours.
The investigators believe that most of the alleged sexual activity took place on school grounds.
Hamilton, who was well-liked at the school, also worked as a bus driver for the Baldwin County School District where he has worked since 2000. Hamilton has been on administrative leave since February 5.
Baldwin County Superintendent Eddie Tyler said in a statement to WALA that the district seized Hamilton’s computer and keys, adding that the district has “zero tolerance” for predatory behavior toward students.
