Butler County, Ohio, Sheriff Richard K. Jones responded to the Florida school shooting by offering free concealed carry classes to teachers.
On Sunday he tweeted:
He made clear that there was room for 50 teachers and that arming teachers is part of a broader theme that “Kids come first.” He received 50 emails within 20 minutes:
Fox 8 reports that Sheriff Jones received negative feedback from Facebook user Tracy Yeager Cleland, who suggested carrying a gun was too much of a responsibility for a teacher. Cleland wrote: “Seriously? Your office can’t even write out this message properly. As a teacher, I don’t want the added responsibility of carrying in a classroom. P.S. I am a gun owner.”
Chase Crawford also posted a comment against arming teachers, suggesting schools should “hire protection” instead of using teachers. Ironically, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School used armed resource officers, rather than teachers.
